5th National Osteology Symposium in China

The future of oral regeneration took centre stage at the 5th National Osteology Symposium China in Guangzhou, 3–5 March 2025.

It brought together over 1,000 dental professionals, researchers, and experts from across the country for a deep dive into the future of oral tissue regeneration. Held in the modern metropolis of Guangzhou the event ran alongside the 30th Dental South China International Expo at the China Import and Export Fair Complex, creating a unique platform for academic exchange and cutting-edge discussions.

Under the theme The Future is Now, the symposium showcased the latest advancements in oral regeneration, bringing together four international speakers, seven national experts, and nine moderators from China’s top dental universities and hospitals. With an immersive 360° stage setup, the symposium set new standards, offering attendees a unique experience.

The event was officially opened by Cheng Bin of the Guangzhou Stomatology Association, followed by welcome addresses from the two Congress Chairs, Lai Hongchang, Director of the Department of Implant Dentistry at Shanghai 9th People's Hospital, and Osteology Board Member Istvan Urban, from Budapest, Hungary. Their carefully curated programme explored the future of oral tissue regeneration, focusing on state-of-the-art treatment concepts and biomaterials that are shaping the next generation of clinical practice.

Key Sessions and Highlights

Moderated by Tang Chunbo, the symposium featured four in-depth sessions on oral tissue regeneration, along with a dedicated segment for real-world case presentations and discussions.

Regeneration in the Aesthetic Zone and Management of Complications

  • Ueli Grunder (Switzerland) shared insights on hard and soft tissue reconstructions in the aesthetic zone.
  • Lai Hongchang presented on space maintenance and alveolar bone defect rehabilitation, emphasising the role of precision and planning in achieving optimal outcomes.

State-of-the-Art in Sinus Elevation

  • Jaime Lozada (USA) addressed the complexities of maxillary sinus grafting, offering strategies for managing complications.
  • Lin Ye provided technical insights on risk management for maxillary sinus grafting, highlighting best practices for safe and effective procedures.

Complex Bone Augmentation

  • Su Yucheng presented advanced techniques in titanium mesh-supported guided bone regeneration (TMs-GBR).
  • Istvan Urban (Hungary) delivered a comprehensive overview of vertical and horizontal augmentation using guided bone regeneration, drawing from his extensive clinical experience.

Soft-Tissue Regeneration

  • Lorenzo Tavelli (USA) discussed patient-centred soft tissue grafting at implant sites, focusing on enhancing both function and aesthetics.
  • Meng Huanxin explored diagnostic criteria for peri-implant soft tissue health and outlined strategies for effective soft tissue augmentation.

Real-World Case Discussions

Beyond theoretical advancements, the symposium placed a strong emphasis on practical, case-based learning. Experts presented clinical case studies, providing attendees with valuable insights into decision-making and surgical techniques:

  • Man Yi offered expert guidance on surgical approaches for keratinised mucosa augmentation.
  • Qian Shujiao shared lessons from a regenerative peri-implantitis case, highlighting critical decision-making processes.
  • Li Shaobing discussed an innovative transalveolar approach using the small segmentation method for inclined maxillary sinus floor elevation.
  • Istvan Urban closed the symposium with two complex bone augmentation cases, demonstrating GBR techniques in action.

Hands-On Workshops

In addition to the scientific sessions, the Symposium also featured four hands-on workshops, providing participants with practical training in the latest regenerative techniques:

  • Soft Tissue Augmentation, led by Ueli Grunder, covering methods for enhancing soft tissue volume around implants.
  • Lateral and Crestal Maxillary Sinus Graft Technique Selection, conducted by Jaime Lozada, offering insights into proper technique selection and managing complications.
  • Minimally Invasive Soft Tissue Grafting at Teeth and Implants, led by Lorenzo Tavelli, focusing on grafting techniques that optimise aesthetic and functional outcomes.
  • Vertical and Horizontal Augmentation Utilising the Sausage Technique, directed by Istvan Urban, detailing advanced methods for predictable bone augmentation.

A Collaborative Success

The success of the 5th National Osteology Symposium China would not have been possible without the invaluable support of our partners. A special thank you goes to the Guangzhou Stomatology Association for hosting the event, and to our corporate partner Geistlich China, whose commitment to innovation and education in oral regeneration continues to drive the industry forward.

We also extend our gratitude to the moderators from ten leading Chinese universities, whose expertise and engagement enriched the discussions and Q&A sessions throughout the event.

With its forward-thinking approach and exceptional line-up of speakers, our National Osteoloy Symposium  Guangzhou 2025 proofed to be a leading event in oral tissue regeneration in China.
