The SEPA, AAP, and the Osteology Foundation collaborative event aimed to expand collective knowledge and reach consensus on «Novel technologies in oral reconstructive medicine». The meeting was distinguished by its international scope, with participants representing both European and US perspectives, and by the scientific rigour and evidence-based approach that characterizes all associations involved.

Meeting structure and participation

A total of 43 participants, fairly representing SEPA, AAP, and the Osteology Foundation, attended the event. In advance of the event, five systematic reviews were drafted, each addressing a critical area in the field of novel technologies in oral reconstructive medicine. The attendees were divided into three working groups, each tasked with an in-depth exploration of one aspect of the systematic reviews. This structure ensured a thorough and multidisciplinary examination of the topics. They then reconvened to reach a consensus on some key areas.

The meeting focused on advanced strategies for bone and soft tissue regeneration in regenerative dentistry, assessing clinical effectiveness, safety, and outcome-determining factors. Strategies for peri-implant soft tissue augmentation, with attention to clinical indications, outcome parameters, and patient-reported experiences were also explored. The potential of combining scaffolds with biologics or cell-based therapies was examined for both bone and soft tissue regeneration, as well as the role of soft tissue substitutes for grafting were assessed. Emerging technologies, including stem cell therapies, personalized scaffold design, and AI-assisted planning, were discussed for their ability to improve predictability and patient outcomes.

A particular focus of the meeting was the clinician’s perspective and the practical applicability of the findings to everyday dental practice. The event fostered a dynamic exchange between researchers and clinicians, ensuring that the consensus statements and recommendations would be relevant and actionable in real-world settings.

Collaborative spirit and scientific rigor

The partnership with SEPA and AAP, two other independent organizations that, like Osteology, recognize and value scientific rigor and evidence-based practice, demonstrated a unified commitment to advancing oral reconstructive medicine on a global scale.

This collaboration underscores a shared dedication to advancing oral reconstructive medicine through innovation grounded in research, clinical relevance, and patient-centered outcomes, ensuring that progress in regenerative therapies continues to be guided by the highest scientific standards.

Conclusion

The consensus meeting in Alcalá successfully brought together leading minds from Europe and the US to address cutting-edge topics in oral reconstructive medicine. Through systematic reviews and group discussions, the event produced a set of consensus statements and research priorities that will help shape the future of the field. The emphasis on clinical applicability ensures that these outcomes will have a direct impact on patient care and the advancement of oral therapies worldwide.
