Dr Calciolari graduated in Dentistry at the University of Parma in 2010 and completed a Master in Periodontology at the University of Siena in 2012. In 2012 she won a 3-year scholarship from the Italian Society of Periodontology, which sponsored her PhD on bone regeneration at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute of London. Currently, she is working as an Associate Professor at University of Parma, as well as at Queen Mary University of London, where she combines teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate level and research activities
She has authored numerous publications in the main scientific journals in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry. Her main research interest is to study and characterize the process of bone/tissue regeneration in healthy and systemically compromised conditions, with a particular interest towards omics technologies. She is also interested in the effect of systemic diseases on the oral cavity.

Her research activity has been recognized with a number of scientific awards, including the Goldman award for clinical research by the Italian Society of Periodontology, the L’Oréal-UNESCO for women in science award and the IADR Women in Science Distinguished Research Award. In 2021 she received the BSODR President’s Prize and the second prize in the IADR Joseph Lister’s award for new investigators.

She took part in the XV European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and Osteology Foundation joint workshop on “Bone Regeneration” and in the EFP consensus conferences that led to the development of the new treatment guidelines for periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
