What do you think went well in terms of project work during this Traineeship?

I am incredibly grateful for the invaluable experience I gained during my 3-month Osteology Traineeship period. It was unique for me to learn the details of the laterally closed tunnel technique, a modification of tunnel approaches developed by my mentor, Prof Dr. Anton Sculean. I feel extremely fortunate to have had the chance to witness the long-term clinical outcomes of these treatment methods firsthand.

What final benefits (professionally and personally) do you take home from the Osteology Traineeship year?

I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to enhance my skills and knowledge as a periodontologist and clinician beyond my experience in Turkey by immersing myself in the world-renowned periodontology centre in Bern. The experience went beyond my expectations, and I learned extensively about the principles of periodontal plastic surgery, the subject of my project, as well as the innovative Bernese Concept for diagnosing and treating periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Moreover, the chance to immerse myself in a culture distinct from my own background was an incredible personal gain. I can confidently say that Bern has become my second home, and I am thankful for this unforgettable experience.

How did you perceive the mentorship, research team and working atmosphere?

I am very grateful for the privilege of working under the guidance of two distinguished experts, Prof Dr. Anton Sculean and Prof Dr. Dieter Bosshardt, during my Osteology Traineeship in Bern. The entire research team was very patient and helpful, making my experience all the more meaningful. Furthermore, I would like to express my appreciation to Dr. Alexandra Stahli for her kindness and invaluable clinical support, which were essential in the success of this project. Their mentorship and guidance were invaluable, and I am thankful for the experience.

What would you do differently if you could start the Osteology Traineeship programme again?

If I could start the Osteology Traineeship programme again, I would like to improve my German to an advanced level and achieve better clinical gains in terms of the patient interaction.

How will you incorporate the learnings of the Traineeship, back at your home institution?

I primarily aim to conduct my clinical research in my home institution in line with the experience and vision I gained during my Traineeship. Additionally, I intend to teach master's and PhD students at my institution the valuable lessons I learned during the program. Moreover, I am planning to perform the diagnosis and treatment approaches in my clinical cases in line with the clinical point of view that I obtained at this center. One of the most significant contributions of the Traineeship program is the opportunity to continue collaborating with the Department of Periodontology at the University of Bern as a research associate, which will aid in furthering my career and vision. I also plan to share my accomplishments and newfound knowledge with my colleagues at my home institution.
