Florence sets the stage for regenerative excellence

News

The National Osteology Symposium in Florence, held from 23 to 25 October 2025, brought together 1,300 clinicians, researchers, and world-renowned experts in oral tissue regeneration for three days of learning, exchange, and inspiration. Jointly organised by the Osteology Foundation and the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP), the meeting offered a unique platform to explore the latest scientific insights and clinical advances in periodontology and implantology.

Day 1: Workshops

Day 1 opened with two hands-on workshops that set the tone for an interactive, practice-oriented symposium. Participants refined their regenerative techniques with Grazia Tommasato and Santo Garocchio, who shared insights on digitally planned vertical GBR, and with Antonio Barone, who explored the decision-making process between immediate implantation and ridge preservation.

Day 2: From periodontal regeneration to vertical ridge augmentation: advancing surgical practice

Day 2 began with a warm welcome by the scientific chairs Istvan Urban and Francesco Cairo, who underlined the shared commitment of both societies to advancing regenerative dentistry. A lectio magistralis by Pierpaolo Cortellini followed, tracing the evolution of periodontal regeneration and highlighting the role of surgical innovation, evidence-based practice, and international collaboration in shaping today’s standards.

The following sessions, moderated by Nicola Sforza, addressed major challenges in contemporary practice. Serhat Aslan demonstrated advanced surgical methods, including his own innovative procedure, where he keeps the papilla intact, while Andrea Pilloni discussed the promising potential of polynucleotides in stimulating tissue regeneration.

The focus then shifted to immediate implant placement, with Daniele Cardaropoli, Marco Zeltner, and France Lambert discussing scientific evidence and practical strategies for managing post-extraction sites. Topics included case selection, digital planning, and the move from prosthetically to biologically driven implant placement, emphasising that while immediate protocols are patient-friendly, they demand precise execution and planning.

The afternoon session on horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation, moderated by Massimo Simion, explored complex defect reconstruction and the balance between clinical efficiency and patient comfort. Alberto Fonzar, Leonardo Trombelli, and Raffaele Cavalcanti shared perspectives on using autologous grafts and substitutes, stressing the importance of safe, minimally invasive, and predictable techniques. Isabella Rocchietta, Matteo Chiapasco, and Marco Ronda concluded the session with evidence-based approaches to vertical ridge augmentation, discussing the regenerative role of the periosteum and comparing simultaneous versus staged augmentation procedures.

Day 3: Addressing soft tissue complications, peri-implantitis, and surgical errors in regenerative practice

Day 3 reached a crescendo with discussions on “The Management of Complications and Errors.” Cristiano Tomasi moderated a captivating session with Luca De Stavola, Martina Stefanini, and Mario Roccuzzo, who shared cases and videos on handling soft tissue overgrowth, apical creeping, and peri-implantitis.

Afterwards, the Osteology Young Video Award was presented to Alessandro Cucchi, whose outstanding work earned well-deserved recognition.

The programme concluded with a thrilling “Nightmare Session” moderated by the scientific chairs Urban and Cairo, featuring Luca Landi, Mauro Merli, and Giovanni Zucchelli. Their remarkable case presentations and lively discussion closed the event on a high note.

Across all sessions, the symposium’s atmosphere was marked by open dialogue, scientific curiosity, and a shared passion for improving patient care through evidence-based regeneration. This also applied to the two special sessions for dental hygienists organised in parallel by the SIdP at the symposium venue.

More workshops

Three additional workshops rounded off the programme in the afternoon: David Palombo and Martina Stefanini guided participants in refining their soft tissue management skills; Federico Rivara and Alessandro Cucchi led a session on vertical ridge augmentation; and Cristiano Tomasi and Paolo Ghensi covered key aspects of mucositis and peri-implantitis.

The symposium’s atmosphere was defined by open dialogue, scientific curiosity, and a shared passion for advancing regenerative dentistry. Participants left Florence inspired, carrying home new ideas, clinical insights, and valuable professional connections.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our founding partner Geistlich Biomaterials Italy and all exhibitors, whose generous support and collaboration made this symposium possible. Their contribution was instrumental in creating an engaging and impactful event that fostered learning, innovation, and exchange.
