Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your personal background, and what made you start a career in dentistry?

I am originally from Iran, where I completed my DDS degree at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and gained experience in both clinical practice and academic work. During my dental studies, I developed a strong interest in the biological mechanisms of oral tissue healing and regeneration, which inspired me to integrate clinical dentistry with research. This passion for regenerative dentistry led me to focus on evaluating biomaterials and biologically based therapies. It eventually motivated me to apply for the Osteology Research Scholarship, through which I continued my research at the University of Bern under the supervision of Prof. Sculean, focusing on bone and periodontal regeneration.

Is there a special highlight you take home from the Osteology Scholarship year?

It is difficult to single out just one moment, as there were many memorable experiences. However, receiving the Osteology Scholarship provided an exceptional environment that enabled me to engage in both research and clinical activities. I had the opportunity to participate in many research projects with Prof. Sculean, Prof. Bosshardt, Dr. Miron, and Dr. Imber, whose constant support and guidance greatly contributed to my growth as a researcher. I was also able to attend clinical case presentations, literature review sessions, seminars, and journal clubs in the periodontology department with the residents, which further deepened my clinical knowledge. In addition, assisting Prof. Sculean and his team during periodontal surgeries was an invaluable experience that greatly enhanced my clinical skills.

How did the scholarship year help you to grow, both privately and professionally?

The scholarship year has provided an invaluable experience for both my professional and personal growth. Through this scholarship, I had the opportunity to meet many leading professionals in the field and expand my network by attending conferences throughout the year. Participating in clinical and research workshops not only helped me enhance my practical skills and scientific understanding but also exposed me to new techniques, methodologies, and perspectives that have enriched my approach to research.

With the Osteology Scholarship under your belt, what will be the next step in your career as a researcher or clinician?

Building on the experience I acquired during the Osteology Scholarship, and with the invaluable support of Prof. Sculean and Prof. Rakic, I have now embarked on my PhD studies at the Department of Periodontology at the University of Bern, where I aim to further advance my research in periodontal regeneration.
