Dr Calciolari graduated in Dentistry at the University of Parma in 2010 and completed a Master in Periodontology at the University of Siena in 2012. In 2012 she won a 3-year scholarship from the Italian Society of Periodontology, which sponsored her PhD on bone regeneration at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute of London. Currently, she is working as a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research at Queen Mary University of London, and at the University of Parma, where she combines research and teaching activities both with undergraduate and post-graduate students. 
She authored numerous peer-reviewed original publications and book chapters and presented at several national and international conferences in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, including EAO, IADR, EuroPerio, AO, and Italian Society of Periodontology. She attended the 2019 and 2020 consensus conferences of the European Federation of Periodontology and contributed to the development of the treatment guidelines for periodontitis stages I, II and III.
Dr Calciolari was awarded with the Goldman award for clinical research in 2014 and in the same year she received the John Zamet prize by the Alpha Omega London Chapter and Charitable Trust. In 2017 she was awarded the prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO for women in science award, being the first Italian dentist to receive it. In 2018 she received the IADR Women in Science Distinguished Research Award.
